Report Examines Spending Trends for Mental Health, Substance Abuse Services, USA
. U.S. Spending for Mental Health and Substance Abuse Treatment, 1990-2001," Health Affairs: In the report, a Health Affairs Web Exclusive, Tami Mark, associate director of outcomes research and econometrics at Medstat; Rosanna Coffey, a Medstat vice president; and colleagues find that spending for mental health and substance abuse treatment totaled $104 billion in 2001, or 7.6% of total U.S. health care spending. According to the report, the annual spending growth rate for mental health and substance abuse services was 5.6% from 1991 to 2001, compared with 6.5% for all health care services. According to the report, spending by public health programs on mental health and substance abuse services increased at a faster rate than private insurers' spending on such services, and much of the growth rate was attributable to an increase in spending on prescription drugs, while spending on inpatient services decreased (Mark et al., Health Affairs, 3/29).
